Baumgartner to hold town hall meetings Jan. 14

6th District residents invited to share ideas and solutions for smarter government

OLYMPIA… Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, will host two town hall meetings this Saturday, Jan. 14, to listen to constituents about their concerns and talk about issues facing the state.

The first town hall will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 in the Multipurpose Room (PUB 101) at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. This meeting will be hosted by the Associated Students of Eastern Washington University.The second town hall is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane. The address is 2316 W. 1st Avenue.

“With the ongoing budget problems facing the state and continued talk of tax increases in Olympia, I think people are looking for a way to make sure that their voices are heard,” Baumgartner said. “My town halls are an excellent opportunity for 6th District residents to do just that. I’m looking forward to hearing what they have to say.”

During the public meetings Baumgartner will offer an update on the recently concluded special legislative session, as well as discuss legislative issues impacting the district and the state. The first town hall at EWU will touch on redistricting, but primarily focus on higher education.

WA Redistricting: New Maps Approved After a Long, Slow Ride and a Very Bumpy Last Mile

After a year-long process, the four voting members of the bipartisan Washington State Redistricting Commission unanimously approved new political maps for congressional and legislative districts midday Sunday, with only hours remaining until the legal deadline to submit the new boundaries to the state legislature for review.

Talks had stalled during the previous week on the issue of how Hispanics should be represented in Yakima’s 15th legislative district. The 2010 U.S. Census data shows significant growth in Hispanic populations in Central and Eastern Washington, concentrations that makes the formation of a district made with a majority of minority residents a naturally occurring thing.

(State law instructs the redistricting commission not to make decisions to benefit or disadvantage specific individuals or groups.)
