Resolution to Prevent the Removal of Hydroelectric Dams
WHEREAS, hydroelectric power generated from the Snake River or Columbia dams is the cheapest, most readily available, and renewable of all power sources, and
WHEREAS, hydroelectric power is abundant in the State of Washington, and
WHEREAS, breaching any dam on the Columbia or Snake Rivers or a tributary (for example the Klamath River), encourages springtime flooding on major rivers, ruining the ecosystem, risking death to residents, fish and animals downstream, from excess flooding with tons of mud and silt, and
WHEREAS, the reservoir behind each dam has been accumulating mud at a rate of 30,000 truckloads each day (this estimate is for Glen Canyon Dam (AZ)) and the estimate would be much higher for larger dams, and
WHEREAS, the scientific research behind dam breaches is extensive and conclusive concerning the devastating downline consequences, and
WHEREAS, the destruction of any dam is a complete waste of the capital involved in the original construction and maintenance, along with loss of energy income of such dam, and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, we do not support any breaching or removal of any existing hydroelectric dam in Washington from which our state grid benefits with energy production.
Approved by the Spokane County Convention Delegates March 2, 2024
To be submitted upon approval to the Washington State Republican Party, Washington State Legislature and Executive Branch, and Washington State Land Commissioner (possible)
